Veepeak OBDCheck BLE Bluetooth OBD-II Scanner
I strongly recommend monitoring actual transmission temperatures, especially when towing, wheeling, or operating your vehicle under severe conditions.
The Veepeak OBDCheck BLE Bluetooth OBD-II adapter can be paired with a compatible free or paid phone app to monitor transmission temperature data directly from the vehicle in real time. Instead of relying on the factory temperature gauge, you can see exactly how hot the transmission is getting and how effectively your auxiliary cooler is controlling temperatures.
This is the OBD-II adapter I personally use for testing and monitoring my 2026 4Runner.
Recommended Apps
For vehicles that support it, I recommend the free Torque app for a simple, easy-to-use setup. For more advanced monitoring, I recommend the free Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app.
During my testing of the latest-generation Toyotas, Car Scanner ELM OBD2 was the only app I was able to get to display transmission temperature data, making it my recommendation for the 2024+ Tacoma, 2024+ Land Cruiser, and 2025+ 4Runner.
Vehicle Compatibility
The Veepeak adapter is compatible with OBD-II vehicles, which generally includes U.S.-market vehicles from 1996 and newer. However, the data available through the OBD-II port varies by vehicle. An OBD-II port does not necessarily mean the vehicle provides transmission temperature data.
Important for older 4Runner owners: The 1996–1998 4Runner does not provide transmission temperature data from a factory ATF temperature sensor, so transmission temperature cannot be monitored through this adapter on those model years.
For supported vehicles, an OBD-II adapter is one of the easiest ways to stop guessing and start monitoring actual transmission temperatures.
